Transport tips

Getting to Canberra
Getting to Canberra is easy. The national capital is linked to state capital cities and major regional areas by regular air, rail and coach services.

Sydney is the nearest capital city to Canberra. Located 306 kilometres south west of Sydney, it is an easy three hour drive by car or bus, and around seven hours’ drive from Melbourne.

Countrylink provides efficient train services from Canberra to Sydney Central Station. There are also several bus services operating to and from Canberra, departing from the Jolimont Centre in the city.

Flying is a quick and easy way to travel to Canberra. Flights can take from just 30 minutes from Sydney International Airport (or just over one hour from Melbourne Airport) with regular air services by Qantas, Virgin Blue, Regional Express (Rex) and Brindabella Airlines. Getting into the city – a 10-minute trip by vehicle – is easy with the Airliner shuttle bus service transporting people between Canberra International Airport and the city hourly, while taxi and hire car options are also available. The Speedy Shuttle Bus Service also offers a pick up and drop off service to accommodation.

Getting around Canberra
Travelling around Canberra city and the surrounding region is easy. Roads are great, parking is hassle-free and all attractions are well signposted.

For a small fee, grab a fold-out map from the friendly staff at the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre on Northbourne Avenue. Small enough to fit in your pocket, but with all the essential stops clearly marked, you’ll be ready to get out there and explore.

You can drive yourself or relax in a bus. Canberra’s public bus service, ACTION Buses, covers the major sights, as well as most of the suburbs. You can pick up a Canberra bus map and timetable from the ACTION information outlet in the city centre or visit www.action.act.gov.au

Hire cars and taxis can also take you to most places you want to go, or see the sights on one of many organised tours available.
