History of the Canadian
Air Cushion Technology Society
(CACTS)
During a 1967 meeting in Ottawa, a group of Canadian Aeronautics
and Space Institute (CASI) members formed an Air Cushion Section.
By 1979 air cushion technology was gaining in popularity, so
a separate organization was instigated, the Canadian Air Cushion
Technology Society (CACTS); this was chaired by a renowned Canadian
Hovercraft engineer, Howard Fowler. Conference numbering can
be confusing. One set of numbers date from the first gathering
in 1967. Meetings occurred bi-annually but not consistently.
According to Jacques Laframboise, the 25th meeting took place
in Montreal during 1998, the 26th in Toronto during 2000, and
now the 27th symposium in Terre Haute 2002. In 1992 a joint conference
with the American Society of Naval Engineers took place in Washington
DC. This was the 23rd CACTS conference.
