HoverWorld Expo 2004 has been cancelled

With great regret, the World Hovercraft Organization and Australian Hovercraft Federation announces that the National Capital Authority in Canberra has declined the opportunity to stage HoverWorld Expo 2004, requiring the cancellation of this important event. Click here for details.
Hovercraft history in the making
On March 14, 1964, more than 30,000 people gathered on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin to watch hovercraft history being made by ten ambitious air cushion vehicle pioneers. These historic photo galleries capture the spirit of the day that marked the beginning of hovercraft racing and the advent of the hovercraft industry.

The Neoteric Hovercraft Gallery contains many close-ups of the craft that originated the sport of hovercraft racing. This gallery was provided by Neoteric president, Chris Fitzgerald, who participated in the World's First Hovercraft Race in a craft built by his company, then known as Australian Air Cushion Vehicles Development.

The Lawrence Doctors Gallery provides a fine overview of the 1964 hallmark in hovercraft history. Dr. Lawry Doctors, whose photographs of the World's First Hovercraft appeared in Flight International Magazine , is now Professor of Naval Architecture at the University of New South Wales, and Honorary Chairman of the International Symposium on Air Cushion Technology at HoverWorld Expo 2004.

The Canberra Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society Archive of historic photos shows a different view of the1964 event. The originals have been lost, but see photocopies of the originals.

We invite you to submit your photos of the World's First Hovercraft Race and we'll display your gallery on the HoverWorld Expo web site!
